The WMO/GWP Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM) has made available a sponsoring opportunity to enable participants from developing countries to attend the 4th International Symposium on Flood Defence (ISFD4) to be held in Toronto, Canada in May 2008. The support will provide an opportunity for 5 flood managers to bring to the attention of a global audience opportunities, constraints and good practices in flood management in their countries. The support is intended to facilitate discussion at the Symposium about various available flood management options for countries with different socio-economic framework conditions.
Support for selected candidates will be provided for travel to ISFD4 and accommodation according to standard WMO procedures. Registration fees for selected candidates from developing countries will be waived subject to agreement by the ISFD4 Organizing Committee.
Applying for sponsorship
The application process is organized as follows:
- Three inputs are required from applicants:
- Completion of the form “Application for support”
- Submission of an abstract for a paper to be presented at ISFD4 (follow the instructions for submission of abstracts)
- Completion of a set of inputs for the APFM “Flood Management Reference Centre”

Deadline to submit applications is 30 June 2007
- Input 1c. should be provided through the Online submission mechanism provided at http://www.apfm.info/database.htm
- Selected candidates will be informed by 01 October 2007 about their participation and required next steps.

Assessment criteria for applications
- Individuals working in the field of flood management that are at the same time residents of a developing country.
- Professional background and experience that facilitate inputs to the Symposium, i.e. especially flood and water resources managers, both from strategic level and operational level such as flood management infrastructure planners and operators, members of flood forecasting and warning services, hydrologists and scientists with a clear focus on flood management issues, flood emergency managers, as welll as flood management policy makers.
- Completion of an entry of the dataset of the applicant’s country of residence/professional activity within the APFM ‘Reference Centre on Flood Management’.
- Submission and acceptance of an abstract of a paper for presentation during the Symposium, which will be assessed by the Organizers on its quality and on its relevance for the Symposium, within the regular acceptance process submission of abstract; review of abstract; acceptance; full paper submission).
